Official: GMC debuts 2012 Yukon and Sierra Heritage Editions

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the GMC brand - something that first appeared at the 1912 New York Auto Show with models like a five-ton dumptruck. It will be the smaller passenger vehicles that do the celebrating, though, with Heritage editions of the Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra 1500 Crew Cab being unveiled next week.

The special edition tweaks are purely cosmetic, with exterior hues on offer such as Heritage Blue (pictured), White Diamond and Onyx Black paired with interiors in Ebony or Light Tan. Embroidered floor mats and headrests will let everyone know your truck or SUV is extra special, along with items like chrome door handles, larger wheels, a power liftgate and original GMC logo script depending on which model you choose.

Adding the Heritage packages adds anywhere from $1,820 to $2,645 to the price, and that's before you've paid for the premium paints. Scroll down for more info on the models, and we'll have more on them live from the New York show floor.

Abu Dhabi hopes to retain F1 test

Abu Dhabi circuit bosses remain hopeful that Formula 1 teams will agree to continue holding the annual Young Driver Test at their Yas Marina circuit, despite serious consideration being given to switching it to Silverstone. As AUTOSPORT revealed earlier this week , F1 teams are thinking about a post-British Grand Prix test because they are worried about burning out staff if it is held in Abu Dhabi near the end of the season. With the way the current calendar is scheduled, if the test takes place after the Abu Dhabi GP then team personnel will likely have to work for five consecutive weeks with no break.

Cadillac Previews Driver-Assistance Systems for XTS and ATS; We Give ’Em a Go

Cadillac has lagged far behind other premium carmakers in rolling out advanced driver-assistance technologies—let’s be clear: we applaud this particular instance of sloth—but the wreath-and-crest brand aims to get up to speed quickly with the 2013 XTS and ATS sedans, as well as the updated 2013 SRX crossover. Official: Cadillac adding vibrating Safety Seat Alert to full suite of safety tech [w/video]

It's going to be a big year for Cadillac, which will soon be reloading its model lineup with the new ATS and XTS sedans. The 2013 ATS compact slots in below the CTS, while the larger 2013 XTS aims to take care of traditional Caddy buyers looking for immensity above all else. While at diametrical ends of the spectrum, the two new models will share a technology package that all revolves around a new seat.

General Motors is throwing around fifty-cent words like "haptic" and phrases like "directional tactile sensation" to describe its new Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates to warn the driver of potential dangers like wandering out of one's lane. The seat employs two electric motors to create its directional feedback, and it's at the center of both safety packages Cadillac will be introducing this year. The first is aimed at merely providing the driver with safety alerts, while a more comprehensive suite will also offer vehicle intervention. Cadillac is using six radar sensors, eight ultrasonic sensors and two vision cameras to drive the new safety systems.

The Driver Awareness Package will debut with the launch of the XTS in the spring and offers the seat, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. In the fall, Cadillac will begin offering the Driver Assist Package, which adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Front and Rear Automatic Braking, and Automatic Collision Preparation. Both packages will also be offered on the SRX crossover, details of which we expect to hear about at the New York Auto Show. Click through the jump to read more and to view two demonstration videos.

Teased: 2013 Lexus ES teased ahead of New York debut

Lexus has released this teaser image of the 2013 ES sedan, and - surprise, surprise - it shows off the spindle grille and LED running lamps found on each and every one of the automaker's vehicles. More to the point, it looks exactly like what we saw in a set of Chinese spy shots that we posted last month, so really, there isn't much left for us to speculate on in terms of design.

The Camry-based Lexus mid-sizer will likely debut in ES 350 guise, powered by Toyota's tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6. And while, historically, there's only been one engine offered in the ES range, rumor has it that this sixth-generation model may gain a hybrid variant with a version of the Camry Hybrid's gasoline-electric powertrain. Regardless, Lexus states that the new ES will feature "a new dynamic driving experience." We'll see about that.

Inside, expect a host of updates similar to what we've seen on the GS sedan, including a larger infotainment display screen and mouse-like controller, as well as the addition of Lexus Enform. We'll have the full details next week live from New York, so stay tuned. For now, hit the jump for the automaker's brief press blast.

Former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg took his first win in Ford colours yesterday, beating Sebastien Loeb to Fafe Rally Sprint victory by just two hundredths of a second. The Rally Sprint, which was run over the legendary Fafe stage, was introduced as a warm-up for this week's Rally of Portugal - and as a way for the organisers to engage with fans in the north of the country. The stage was last used as part of the WRC round in 2001, the last year the Rally of Portugal ran in the north, since its return to the calendar in 2007 it has been based in Faro on the Algarve.

The good news: Demand for parking spaces is down among residents of central Chicago. But here’s the bad news: The city of Chicago still requires lots of parking.
Downtown Chicago apartment buildings have seen a decline in the percentage of residents who lease a parking space. Meanwhile, the city's minimum parking requirements haven't changed. Photo of [...]

Mercedes silent on future F1 deal

Mercedes-Benz is keeping silent on the reasons why it has not joined rival teams in agreeing commercial terms with Bernie Ecclestone, amid speculation that it is not happy with the way some outfits have been handed a preferential financial deal. Ecclestone dropped a bombshell on Saturday morning in Malaysia when he announced that a 'majority' of teams had agreed to new commercial terms that will keep them committed to Formula 1 beyond this year

Karthikeyan sorry for Button accident

Narain Karthikeyan has apologised to Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel for getting involved in incidents with them during the Malaysian Grand Prix. The HRT driver tangled with Button at Turn 9 shortly after the race restart as they battled for position, and then later on tagged Vettel's left rear as he was being lapped in the closing stages.

Official: BMW recalling 1.3 million 5 and 6 Series models worldwide

2008 BMW 5 Series sedan - gray, front three-quarter

BMW has announced it is recalling a whopping 1.3 million 5 Series and 6 Series vehicles from the 2003 to 2010 model years. Of those, Reuters notes that some 368,000 examples were sold in the U.S. - most of them sedans like the one above.

It doesn't sound like too difficult of a problem to fix, but the automaker says the cars' battery cable covers could be incorrectly mounted. BMW says no accidents or injuries have occurred because of the issue, but there is the potential that affected models may fail to start, or worse, catch fire.

Owners will be receiving a letter soon and will be asked to visit a BMW dealer for about a 30-minute repair session.

A company spokesman tells The Wall Street Journal that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been notified. Just 9 months ago, BMW was penalized $3 million for failing to report safety defects to NHTSA quickly enough. It looks like they may have learned their lesson. Read the full press release after the jump.

Study: Teen girls twice as likely to use cell phones while driving as teen boys

Crazed teen girl behind the wheel

Research by the American Automobile Association's Foundation for Traffic Safety has revealed teenage girls are twice as likely as their male counterparts to use devices like cell phones while driving. The study used video taken of young drivers while they were behind the wheel to determine how teenagers engage in distracted driving. While talking on the phone and texting ranked among the highest sources of distraction, personal grooming and reaching for objects in the vehicle also played significant roles. Outside of using electronic devices, AAA found teens were distracted around 15 percent of the time while behind the wheel.

Girls were also found to be 10 percent more likely than their male counterparts to be engaged in other distracted driving activities. AAA found the young ladies to be 50 percent more likely to attempt to reach for something in the vehicle and 25 percent more like to eat while operating a vehicle.

Of course, driving with passengers in the vehicle also contributed to distraction, while having a parent or adult in the vehicle caused rates of distracting behavior to fall off. Shocking stuff we know. Hit the jump for the full AAA press release.

Vergne delighted with first points

Jean-Eric Vergne praised the improvements made by Toro Rosso during the early part of the season after scoring his first Formula 1 World Championship points by finishing eighth at the Malaysian Grand Prix. After starting 18th, Vergne made a strong start and found himself seventh when the race was stopped early on after electing to eschew a stop to change from intermediate tyres to full wets when the rain was at its heaviest

Chevrolet drivers still wary of Honda

Leading Chevrolet drivers have cautioned against reading too much into the manufacturer's dominant performance over main rival Honda in qualifying for the IndyCar season-opener at St Petersburg. Chevrolet-powered cars occupied five of the six slots in the final phase of qualifying, with Schmidt-Hamilton Motorsport's Simon Pagenaud the sole Honda representative

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Photos and Info: The V12-Powered Roadster Lives

In an age of engine downsizing and emissions-reduction mandates, one might expect the V-12 engine—volumes of which never were very high in the first place—to hit the endangered-species list. Massa: Perez form no added pressure

Felipe Massa said that he does not feel under any more pressure at Ferrari as a result of Sergio Perez's second-placed finish at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Sauber driver Perez, who is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, put race-long pressure on the Italian squad's lead driver Fernando Alonso and eventually finished 2.3 seconds behind to claim the first podium finish of his Formula 1 career. The Mexican finished over 1.5 minutes ahead of the Brazilian.
